Understanding Atwood

I think that the biggest question that comes to my mind when I read The Handmaids Tale is: What inspired her or motivated her to write such a story? Did something traumatic happen to her at some point during her life? Or did the events surrounding her when she was growing up have such an impact on her that she decided to write such a story? And if so, what were those specific events? I want to research Atwood’s biography to try and find out what it was about her life that impressed her to the point of writing this book. Maybe it was a single event, or maybe it was several things she lived through or saw others live through that gave her the initiative to write this story.
I believe that researching Margaret Atwood’s background will provide great insight and help me to better understand The Handmaids Tale. I hope that I will find out about the key events in her life that helped create this story in her mind and why she believed it was important.
